Cable transits for explosion-proof environments

According to EU regulations and IECEx standards, the ATEX directive must be applied in all working environments where explosive materials are present. This applies to areas involving fuel production and storage, the application of chemicals or the use of hazardous substances. MCT Brattberg has developed and tested an Ex-approved range of cable and pipe transits to protect adjacent sites in such areas.

For situations where MCT Brattberg penetrations must be installed in an explosion-hazard environment, MCT Brattberg has undergone various tests to comply with the special guidelines of IEC-Ex and ATEX. Standard products from MCT Brattberg can be used for this purpose. Previously, all parts had to be provided with a visible marking, such as a repetitive Ex stamp on all rubber parts. That requirement is no longer in effect. However, a complete transit window that is used in an Ex environment must be marked as a product certified for Ex environments, and the specific Ex notation must also be shown. For the rectangular windows from MCT Brattberg, such as the various variants of the RGS frames, a PTG end seal is used, which is provided with a silver-colored metal plate on one side showing the Ex notation. When using the round RGP windows, a comparable metal plate (supplied along with the transit) must be placed directly next to the penetration on the wall. All Ex certified products from MCT Brattberg are suitable for both Zone 1 and Zone 2.

If desired, all ATEX certified Ex penetrations from MCT Brattberg are also available in an EMC-resistant version.

IEC-Ex and ATEX

MCT Brattberg Ex cable glands comply with the ATEX Directive 2014/34/EC and the applicable IECEx requirements. In addition, the MCT Brattberg Ex cable penetrations are approved by DNV-GL. In addition, the manufacturer complies with the quality and environmental standard requirements of ISO 9001, 14001 and OHSAS 18001.

Successful Ex tests have been carried out on the entire RGB and RGS product line at Baseefa’s renowned test laboratory. The following Ex notation applies to this product line:

Group II Category 2GD Ex ebIIC Gb Ex tb IIIC Db Service Temperature (-60ºC to +70ºC).

In order to get a transit certified, the complete transit including filling must be ordered in one order. Only in this way can it be ensured that the transit to be installed actually meets the ATEX certification requirements.
