Project: Renovation 1st runway Brussels Airport
Industry: Infrastructure
Location: Brussels
Completion: 2015
Client : Brussels Airport
Installer: Louis Stevens & Co nv

In May this year, the thorough renovation of the first of three runways to be renovated at Brussels Airport started. The complete renovation of the runway was necessary as the previous renovation of the runways was in 1985. A thorough renovation is necessary every 30 years, so that air traffic can run safely. The first runway, the more than 3 km long 07R/25L, was completed by Aswebo this month, almost 3 weeks ahead of schedule. The other two runways will follow in the coming years.

Contractor Aswebo started renovation work at Brussels Airport in May. Thanks to good cooperation between airport operator Brussels Airport Company, the contractors, Belgocontrol and the airlines, possible inconvenience to passengers during the construction work could be kept to a minimum.

In addition to replacing all top asphalt layers, the necessary drainage channels, paved verges and the sewage system were completely renovated and new lighting was installed.

A sustainable approach was chosen as the starting point for the planned activities. Not only was energy-efficient LED lighting chosen for all 1,300 lighting fixtures around the runway, the scraped asphalt was also reused for the new foundation layer. As a result, no less than 100,000 tons of waste were avoided, as well as thousands of transport and delivery journeys for new material. In addition, grooving technique was applied in the top layer of the new runway. By making small grooves in the asphalt at a very short distance of approx. 4 cm, the drainage in the rain improves as well as the grip of aircraft tires on the runway, while at the same time reducing runway wear.

A total of 218 kilometers of cables were replaced during the renovation work. The company Louis Stevens & Co from Halen (B) was responsible for the execution of the electrical work. For the watertight sealing of the transit points for these cables, Louis Stevens & Co opted for the round RGP transit plugs from MCT Brattberg, supplied by Theunissen Technical Trading BV. Apart from the speed and service on delivery, the controllability of the feed material, as well as its simple and fast processing, were decisive.
