CSD Spartacus

Vessel Name: Spartacus
Vessel type: Cutter Suction Dredger
Yard: IHC Kinderdijk
Owner: DEME
Installer: IHC Drives and automation BV
Completion: 2019

The 164-metre-long ‘Spartacus’ is the world’s largest self-propelled cutter suction dredger and the first to be powered by LNG. Spartacus follows the series of the first LNG-powered trailing suction hopper dredgers ‘Minerva’ and ‘Scheldt River’ and also has a Green Passport and Clean Design notation.

With a total power of 44,180 kW, Spartacus is the most powerful Cutter Suction Dredger ever built. This power makes it possible to dredge harder soils at speeds that were previously not possible. The maximum dredging depth has also been increased to 45 m, compared to the 35 m depth which is currently the upper limit in the market.

For the penetrations, the RGS and RGSbtb welding frames were chosen for the Spartacus. RGSbtb is a double window, which is filled on both sides with transit blocks, creating a transit that can withstand 5 bar (test) pressure on both sides.
